The Angel’s Head is a surviving fragment of what was once the magnificent high altar of the Church of the Immaculate Conception of the Blessed Virgin Mary in Horodenka. The church was built between 1745 and 1769 thanks to the creative collaboration between the architect Bernard Meretyn and the sculptor Johann Georg Pinsel. Its construction took place under the patronage of Mykola Vasyl Pototskyi, the starosta of Kaniv. The master carved this sculptural detail during the height of his expressive style – approximately between 1750 and 1755. Although the church’s unique Baroque interior was destroyed during the Soviet era, this sculptural masterpiece was successfully saved. Today, separated from its original architectural context, the cherub’s head stands before viewers as a self-sufficient and profoundly meaningful work of art.

Description

The front of the angel’s head is covered in an authentic light-coloured levkas, whilst the textured hair reveals the warm, natural tone of the bare wood. In this work, Pinsel demonstrates his characteristic psychologism, a far cry from the saccharine light-heartedness of the classical Italian Baroque. The child’s face is filled with an almost adult-like, profound sorrow. The large, wide-open eyes are directed forward and upwards. The plump lips, through which the faint outline of the teeth is visible, are frozen in a half-open, silent cry or sigh. This dramatic expression is traditionally interpreted as a sacred premonition of Christ’s future martyrdom.

The sculpture’s form allows one to appreciate the astonishing dimensionality of the shape and the artist’s virtuosity with the chisel. The contrast between the smooth, soft skin of the child’s face and the dynamic, graphic strands of curls creates a tense, pulsating interplay of light and shadow. The angel’s hair does not merely frame the head – it has a life of its own, moving with a swift, dynamic energy. This highlights the artist’s ability to breathe a living spirit and deep emotional tension into the inert texture of the wood.
