The Angel from Horodenka. The Drama of a Frozen Sigh

The angel’s head comes from the main altar ensemble of the Church of the Immaculate Conception of the Blessed Virgin Mary in Horodenka. This magnificent Baroque church was built between 1745 and 1769 through the collaboration of the architect Bernard Meretyn and the sculptor Johann Georg Pinsel. Mykola Vasyl Pototskyi, the starosta of Kaniv, patronised the project. The wooden sculpture dates from the first half of the 1750s – a period marking the height of Pinsel’s creative achievement. Despite the destruction of the church’s interior during the Soviet era, the sculpture was saved thanks to the dedicated efforts of Ukrainian art historians. Today, this fragment stands as an independently significant work of art and historical importance.

Description

The wooden head of the angel is made in the expressive, sculptural style characteristic of Pinsel’s unique school of woodcarving. Its face is covered with a layer of authentic light-coloured levkas, which contrasts strikingly with the darker tone of the hair and the exposed texture of the wood in areas where material has been lost. The sculptural form combines an intimate scale with a remarkable sense of monumental significance. The child’s face lacks the classical Baroque serenity – Pinzel imbues the figure with a subtle, dramatic psychological depth. The large, deeply set eyes reveal a sorrowful gaze, filled with a silent plea. The childish, plump lips are barely parted in a restrained, almost tragic sigh. The angel’s hair is carved in deep, bold strands, creating a complex, dynamic interplay of light and shadow.

A distinctive feature of this artefact is the clear evidence of historical damage and the relentless passage of time. Deep chips in the levkas are visible on the tip of the nose and the chin, exposing the wood and revealing the work’s internal structure. The smooth, flat cuts on the back of the head and neck indicate prior restoration or dismantling. This damage to the work does not detract from its artistic power; on the contrary, they lend it a particular poignancy, emphasising the dramatic fate of Pinsel’s legacy.
